Travel from
UK to the house By Brittany Ferries
-
You can travel either from Portsmouth to St Malo (8 hour crossing) and
then have a 3 and a half hour drive to the house.
Or, you can travel from Plymouth to Roscoff (six hour crossing) and
have a 1 hour 40 minute drive to the house. This is my preferred route.
Brittany Ferries will be operating a new ferry from March 2004 which
will reduce journey time to 4 hours.

The journey instructions
from St Malo are:
As you leave St Malo, follow signs for Dinan (not Dinard). This takes
you due south until you pick up the Voie Express N 176 west heading
for St. Brieuc, Morlaix then Brest (dual carriageway all the way).
When you get to the outskirts of Brest, look for signs for Quimper.
You go through many roundabouts following signs for Quimper and onto
the new dual carriageway going south across the suspension bridge.
After about 20-25 minutes, start looking out for the turning for Chateaulin
and Douarnenez — you are now about 50 mins from Audierne.
Drive into Chateaulin along the river, turn right across the bridge
and then left up the hill towards Douarnenez. Watch out for the left
turn to Douarnenez at the top of the hill.
As you come into Douarnenez, look out for the left turn signposted Audierne,
just after the beach — this is hard to see so take care as you
look — the sign is on your left as you turn left.
The French motorists will hate you for slowing down to see but you must
do this otherwise you will go past the sign. You are now on the road
to Audierne, so follow it all the way to the bridge in Audierne.
The journey instructions
from Roscoff are:
Leave the port and follow the road south past St Pol-de-Leon following
signs for Landivisiau, Just before you arrive in Landivisiau you hit
the main road to Brest (the same road as you would take if coming from
St Malo).
From here follow same directions outlined above. When you reach Audierne
you follow signs for Quimper: drive over the bridge; you are now in
Plouhinec. Turn right at the traffic lights on the hill, sign posted
Port de Pêche, Criee. Drive down the hill and straight over the
mini roundabout, up the hill on the other side and round the left hand
bend. Just as you round the bend, you will see the local church on your
right, then the communal waste bins on your left and a field dropping
away to the valley.
There are two little lanes leading up the hill on your right. Park by
the wall: it is very safe here. Impasse du Commandant Violant is the
second of the little lanes, i.e. the lane to the left of the sign ‘Rue
de Commandant Violant’. Walk up the narrow lane, round the corner
and number three (3) is the first house standing alone on your left.
You cannot take your car to the house as the lane is narrow and the
position of the house means cars at number 3 block the lane if you park
outside the gate.
You can park to unload your car of course.
If you decide to approach Plouhinec from the direction of Quimper, go
straight past the roundabout with the Intermarche supermarket and petrol
station on you right and continue down the hill for about one mile until
you reach the traffic lights, signpoated Port de Peche, Criee and then
follow directions to the house as above.

By Ryanair
– There are now daily flights from London Stansted to Brest where
you can hire a car. This is a very good option for short breaks. |
